October is Infant Death Awareness

In 1998 President Reagan proclaimed October as Pregnancy and infant loss awareness month throughout the United States. This type of loss affected President Reagan when he lost a daughter from his first marriage.

Why Awareness?

Each year, over half a million dreams are shattered. Our National Center for Vital Statistics show 3,941,553 births in the United States and reflect a 7.2 infant death rate per 1000 lives, and, 3.5 late fetal mortality rate per 1,000 lives. Miscarriage occurs in 15 to 20 percent of pregnancies.

According to our research to date, there is a great need for support and change in the way our communities deal with miscarriage, stillbirths and neonatal death. Unfortunately, stillbirths occur more than people realize.

Not everyone understands the emotional investment parents put into their unborn children, in some cases even before that child is conceived. The hopes, dreams, plans, love and anticipation are real, even if no one has yet seen this child.

Families who suffer this tragedy need sensitive caregivers, understanding friends and supportive family members.

Yes, awareness is important. A supportive environment can make all the difference in how parents incorporate this loss, this precious child, into their lives in a healthy manner and return to a "new normal."

Ways to commemorate National Pregnancy and Infant loss Awareness

Make ribbons and informational brochures and pass them out to family, friends, at hospitals, doctor's offices, churches, funeral homes, etc.

Organize a memorial service or educational seminar at a church or hospital.

Plant and dedicate a plant in memory of your child.

Make a donation to a charitable foundation in memory of your child.

Light a candle on October 15th at 7:00 p.m. local time - the idea is to have a continuous wave of light encircle the earth in memory of the children we have waiting in Heaven for us!

Check your town hall and church for local services and community groups.

There will be candle lighting in Orange, CT at the High Plains Community Center on Orange Center Road on October 15th.
